 WHO WE ARE

We are a group of concerned community members and residents of Chicago.  Some of us are independently employed. Some are graduate students.  Some are parents. Others hold positions as university faculty.  All of us are people of color, with the vast majority being women.  Collectively, because we deeply value the relationships that have developed in our time as justice-workers, we tell our story because we do not want history to repeat itself.  In many instances where individuals and/or groups have orally shared their decision to disband or leave, our intention is to create a living account of what has transpired, for the purpose of providing guideposts for those who continue to create justice-centered curriculum for k-16 classrooms and communities. Contrary to the opinions that some may construct after reading the documents included on this site, the goal is not to air organizational “dirty laundry” or to complain because we felt we were treated unfairly. Instead, our concerns are rooted in the ways that multi-racial, inter-generational work is imagined and performed, ensuring the humanity and dignity of all involved. Ultimately, our commitment to educational justice and self-determination is rooted in our ability to articulate the realities of gender and race in the attempt to create curriculum that remains accountable and responsible to communities of color that have been dispossessed of their right to think and create. For these reasons, our story is not one that is told by the “winners”. Alternatively, it is one that is told by those who continue to struggle and persevere, despite the circumstances.
