For those of us who did not die:
Departure as an act of resistance, solidarity
and self-determination
While we feel that the concerns outlined in our letters have not been adequately addressed, we have made the decision to no longer pursue these matters with CGCT, and rather, are choosing to use our time and energy to build liberatory educational spaces that nurture and honor the humanity and dignity of everyone involved. We understand individuals make the decision to volunteer their time and energy to create resources in liberatory curricula with the hopes that a wide audience of students, educators, and community members learn to transform the world we live in. We understand that everyone’s contribution to every and any component of CGCT’s efforts to support social justice education is honored and respected as moments of community empowerment and emancipation. We understand that money is a resource that supports educational initiatives, especially in this day and age of neo-liberal economics. However, once resources for liberatory education become commodified and human labor, in the name of community empowerment, is exploited by an entity, such as CGCT, we believe it is our duty as social justice advocates to stop our support of their practices. While it is unclear what our next steps will be to continue our work with educators and community members, we are very clear that the foundation of this educational movement is based in the transformation of relationships we form through love, respect, and compassion, and not on the financial transactions within organizations.
